Michael, could you please tell our readers a bit about yourself and your journey to becoming an expert in the construction industry?

I’ve spent nearly 30 years in the construction industry. My journey started in Massena, New York, where I developed a passion for building early on. I earned a degree in Electrical Construction and Maintenance from Canton Tech, which gave me a solid foundation. Working with companies like BBL Construction and Jackson Demolition shaped my skills. In 2019, I launched MRM Construction Services to focus on quality residential remodeling.

What key experiences or milestones in your career have shaped your perspective on the industry and its future?

Starting my own company in 2019 was a significant milestone. It taught me the importance of balancing craftsmanship with innovation. Another key moment was managing complex projects in older homes. These experiences made me realize how much the industry can blend tradition with modern advancements. Staying adaptable has been a central lesson.

Can you share an example of a challenging construction project you faced and the innovative solutions you implemented to overcome those obstacles? What key takeaway can readers apply to their own projects?

I worked on a historic home that needed both preservation and modernization. We encountered outdated wiring and structural issues. By using careful planning and consulting with specialists, we kept the home’s charm while adding modern systems. The takeaway: Plan thoroughly, communicate openly, and stay flexible to find solutions.

The construction industry is constantly evolving with new technologies and methodologies. How have you adapted to these changes throughout your career, and what advice would you give to professionals looking to stay ahead of the curve?

I've embraced tools like 3D modeling software and project-management apps to streamline planning and communication. Smart-home technology is another area I've incorporated. My advice: stay curious, invest in continuous learning, and don't shy away from new technology. It can save time and improve results.

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in construction. Can you share an example of how you've incorporated sustainable practices into your work and any tips for our readers to do the same?

We use eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood and low-VOC paints in our projects. For one remodel, we installed energy-efficient insulation and a solar-powered water heater. My tip: Start small by choosing sustainable materials or energy-efficient fixtures. It benefits the environment and adds value for clients.

Safety is paramount in construction. What measures do you prioritize on your projects to ensure a safe working environment for everyone involved?

We conduct regular safety briefings and ensure all workers have proper protective equipment. Clear communication about potential hazards is critical. Keeping job sites clean and organized also minimizes risks. Safety isn’t negotiable; it’s foundational to every project.

Building strong relationships is crucial in this industry. How have you fostered positive collaborations with clients, architects, contractors, and other stakeholders on your projects?

Clear and consistent communication is key. I make sure all parties are aligned from the start and maintain regular updates throughout the project. Respect and transparency build trust. Treating every collaborator as part of the same team leads to smoother projects and stronger relationships.

Looking ahead, what do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the construction industry in the near future?

One challenge is rising material costs and supply chain issues. The opportunity lies in technology, like modular construction and advanced design tools, which can improve efficiency. Sustainability is also a growing focus that presents exciting possibilities for the future.

What advice would you give to aspiring construction professionals just starting their careers in this dynamic field?

Learn as much as you can from every job. Stay hands-on and pay attention to details. Focus on communication—it's just as important as technical skills. Most importantly, be adaptable and open to learning new methods and technologies.
